The 23-year-old Rwandan artist, popularly known as Isimbi Dee, recently kicked off her music career with a new jam ‘Umbababrire’.

Isimbi Dee, singer, actress and composer, collaborates with various artists through poems and songs. From her real name Dorcas Umutoni, the singer has been passionate about music since childhood but never dared to get involved until she became an adult.

“When I was young, music was the only thing that made me feel comfortable, but back then, all I could do was hum…” Umutoni laughs.

“I knew I loved music when I was a freshman in high school, and I tried to write my first song in 2017, I know I loved it, but I lacked confidence,” adds- she.

The young artist overcame her fears and began to sing in church choirs, and gradually she integrated herself.

“I love music, and music is life for me,” Umutoni says, adding, “When you love music, you try different ways to make it your thing.”

After officially starting her singing career in 2020 and gaining management from Ishusho, Umutoni recently released her song titled “Umbabarire” produced by Ayoo Rash. The artist plans to release his album and says it will be a banger.

Umutoni engages her audience by making Afro-fusion and Afro funky songs, and she says that’s her style.

“Music is my job. It’s my passion, my hobby and my job because I can’t do anything I don’t like.

Umutoni points out that up-and-coming young artists face the challenge of people claiming to support them when they want further favors from them, and she calls on other artists to be aware of this.

“When I started this career as a solo artist, I faced a lot of challenges, and a lot of young artists go through this, but after you sit down and realize what’s going on, you step back and stay strong” , says Umutoni. “I advise other artists, especially young girls, to be careful and focus on hard work and learn to say no.”

Asked about the future, Umutoni plans to go international and make her country proud.

“I want to make music as an international artist. We already have good talented artists, but they are always local,” she says. “To achieve that, I have to make good music that will reach the international market,” she adds.

Ranking of kings continues to sweep the anime community with its amazing animation, storytelling, and stunning soundtrack. Milan Records released the anime series’ soundtrack digitally. Anime Trending had the opportunity to speak to music composer MAYUKO and her creative process behind Ranking of kings‘ soundtrack.

MAYUKO (Image source: Milan Records)

Could you tell us how you were approached to work on the soundtrack of Ranking of kings? Did you know the manga before working on the music?

I read the original story in one sitting once it became a hot topic on social media. About two years later, I was very surprised when my manager informed me that I had been offered the position of Ranking of kings.

What was the music creation process and the working relationship with WIT Studio and the other members of the creative team?

Everyone’s love for the original work is incredible. I felt their commitment to making the show good and conveying the excellence of the original work at every turn. I was very impressed with the completeness of the storyboards I saw early on, and when it came to the music, I could clearly see what they were aiming to do through their sharp detailing and instructions like ” That kind of music for that scene, “etc.

Ranking of Kings -Main theme-

The soundtrack features a variety of bold orchestral sounds and peaceful tones for moving moments. How did you choose these moods? Did you know what anime scenes the soundtracks would be used for?

At the first meeting, I was given a spreadsheet showing which song to use in which scene. Some of the compositions have been specified to some degree. For example, for the scene in which Bojji appears, I was told that the composition would be short, but that I would have to use certain instruments. There are also songs for which I decided the rules myself, for example with Miranjo, using a female choir, a triple time and the bell sound. And then as Daida has a “cool” image, I used synthesizer sounds to bring it all together.

The album that is now available with a ton of stunning soundtracks. Could you tell us about the creative process behind “Ranking of Kings -Main Theme-” and “Bojji Daiboken”?

“Ranking of Kings -Main Theme-” took three days after I started working on it. The intro and chorus were done first, and after two days of simmering, I sang it out loud and the middle part was connected and finished. The sopranino recorder, which is the main instrument of “Bojji Daiboken,” only appears in the second half of the song, which is one of my favorite parts. In “Bojji Daiboken,“I used low strings and a fast tempo to show him the fast march, and the marimba and sopranino recorder to express this speed. When I write a song, I put on headphones and hone my senses to create it all at once, so I don’t remember a lot of details. LOL!

Bojji Daiboken

Composing music and live recordings has been difficult during the pandemic. How did you navigate for Ranking of kings?

Since my usual style of songwriting is at home, there really isn’t much that has changed. Instead, every time concerts and live performances were canceled and I saw the sadness and frustration of other musicians, I quietly said to myself, “I want to write good songs and help, even a little, to drive the entertainment industry.

Funny or memorable stories while working on the soundtrack?

The producers gave us the okay for the songs after I gave them the first dozen to listen to, and I said, “I guess we’re going in that direction!” I felt confident that I could do it. Director Hatta’s commentary, “It’s fun to listen to,” was very reassuring. Since I spent more than six months on the production of the series, I had to buy new sounds for the battle scenes along the way, and at night I spent hours thinking about Ouken and listening , which was a very valuable experience.

All final comments to fans as they listen to the Ranking of kings soundtrack?

The soundtrack is the result of everything I put into it, so I hope you find your favorite!

Ranking of kings is now streaming on Crunchyroll. The soundtrack is released via Milan Records on various digital platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, etc.

MENTION the name of Jimmy Boyle to music lovers of my generation and it rings like a bell from an accomplished jazz composer and pianist.

Next, the Penangite was perhaps the most famous composer of Malay songs. I vividly remember listening to his songs when I was growing up in the 1960s.

Son of the Penang Eurasians behind the iconic Putera Puteri (sometimes spelled Putra Putri), Boyle’s notable compositions included Untuk Negeri Kita, Chendering, Jauh Jauh, Ingat Ingat, Bunga Negara, Sang Bayu, Ke-Hulu Ke-Hilir, Pantun Melayu, Gemaran Bulan and my favorite song, Putera Puteri.

A momentous occasion in Boyle’s life was when one of his compositions, Kemegahan Negaraku (Majesty of My Country), was chosen to be performed at the inaugural raising of the Malaysian flag on August 31, 1957.

One of Boyle’s best-known compositions, Untuk Negeri Kita, was adopted as Penang’s state anthem in 1972, a year after his death.

He composed the music and wrote the lyrics for this song.

Boyle was not only a prolific composer, but also an equally well-known pianist, who learned to play the piano from his mother who was a piano teacher.

He wrote almost 350 songs during his lifetime and some of his songs, like Putera Puteri, were familiar to many who learned it in school.

Boyle endured hardship during the Japanese occupation after being incarcerated.

He was a student at St Xavier’s Institution in Penang and returned to his alma mater as a teacher shortly after the war.

One day, at the request of British officers in Penang, he formed a band and entertained them with music at a dinner party at the Runnymede Hotel. And this was the beginning of his musical career.

Subsequently, Boyle also performed at Minden Barracks, now the site of Universiti Sains Malaysia, and the RAAF base at Butterworth.

Friends who knew Boyle remember him as a man who had music in his veins and some even considered him a musical genius.

His songs were patriotic in nature and blended harmony with an unwavering love and passion for his country.

Boyle was destined to compose patriotic songs and we certainly need more such songs in our polarized society today.

Other prominent musicians from Penang at this time included David Yeoh, Ahmad Merican and Datuk Seri Ahmad Nawab.

Boyle’s musical legacy lives on through his son, James, a graduate of Boston’s prestigious Berkley School of Music.

In 2006, jazz fans had the opportunity to see James perform in Penang as James Boyle and The Ragged Tigers.

In 2010 there was another performance during the Fringe Festival, followed by a similar concert in 2016, organized by Paul Augustin.

Augustin knew the main drivers of music in Penang and like Boyle had a great passion for jazz.

James also wrote a book about his father called The Music and Legacy of Jimmy Boyle.

In memory of his father, James recorded another of his father’s famous songs, Chendering, with a well-known singer, Bizhu, at the Penang House of Music.

Chendering, written in 1960, talks about a beach in Terengganu. Boyle was a keen admirer of the Malaysian countryside.

James has performed with notable Malaysian musical luminaries over the years, including the late Paul Ponnudorai.

James paid tribute to Ponnudorai and his band, Paul Ponnudorai and The Handsome Coconuts, and he had recognized them as a good learning curve for him.

Ponnudorai, who died in 2012, had himself supported some of Malaysia’s renowned artists, including Datuk Sudirman Arshad.

He co-produced Sudirman’s hit song One Thousand Million Smiles with jazz maestro Michael Veerapen.

Many young people today struggle to name a favorite local jazz player unless they click on YouTube or Google.

They are oblivious to the names of renowned personalities from the past like Ahmad Merican, Alfonso Soliano and Boyle.

In the 1960s and 1970s, pianist Ooi Eow Jin was one of the country’s most sought-after composers, having written hits for singers like Sudirman.

Boyle was the epitome of a good musician, composer and popular teacher.

But the most striking virtue he possessed was that he was a true Malaysian patriot, which is definitely a rarity these days.

As well as being nationalistic, his songs were soothing to any musical ear as they were often mixed with jazz music.

Rising above all races and cultures, Boyle’s songs have instilled a sense of patriotism in our country.

He was definitely another imposing Malaysian in every sense of the word and he did more for national unity than the oratory of most people in power.

Boyle died at the relatively young age of 49 in 1971, after succumbing to an intracerebral hemorrhage.

Even after more than five decades since his passing, many members of my generation still remember him for the music and songs he composed. Many of his songs are like a timeless beauty.

Perhaps he was one of the most talented music composers Malaysia has ever produced.

To my surprise, such an important musical figure is still unknown to many young Malaysians.

It is time that these famous personalities of the past were given their rightful place in the musical annals of our country.

Unfortunately, there is currently a dearth of local jazz talent in the country compared to our glorious past.

Boyle has not received due recognition for his immense contributions to the Malaysian music scene.

The federal and state governments of Penang should posthumously honor this legend for his immeasurable contributions to the local music industry.

It would be a fitting tribute if a significant landmark in Penang were named after this music icon.

Thaman’s recent music has reached new heights.

The action film marked Thaman’s second collaboration with actor Nandamuri Balakrishna and director Boyapati Sreenu.

Music composer S Thaman is currently riding the success of Akhanda’s soundtrack which was released in December last year. Having spent fourteen years in the music industry, which has seen him experience his share of ups and downs, Thaman is undeniably at the peak of his career right now.

Thaman’s recent music has reached new heights. He works hard to bring to life any film entrusted to him. Thaman has provided music for films featuring some of Tollywood’s top stars including Mahesh Babu, Pawan Kalyan, Junior NTR and Chiranjeevi.

Akhanda, the action thriller, marked Thaman’s second collaboration with Nandamuri Balakrishna and director Boyapati Sreenu. In an interaction with the media, Thaman at the time said Akhanda’s music was different from his other projects because a lot of research was done to understand the nuances of Aghoris’ life. He had to ensure that the musical instruments and lyrics used for the Aghora episodes in the film were sufficiently authentic. He also confirmed that due to the delay in the release of the film, he was given the opportunity to update the background music according to new trends.

The soundtrack turned out to be a big hit and more because of the amazing background music. He received the maximum success of his entire career for Akhanda’s soundtrack. And now, following the success, Thaman has increased his compensation. His salary, which was in lakhs until now, has now increased to crores. While it still charges less for lower budget films, for bigger ones it now charges up to Rs 1.5 crore.

Thaman recently composed Radhe Shyam’s background music with Prabhas and Pooja Hegde.

Kolkata: Music Director Alokananda Dasgupta is one of the 10 participants in the prestigious BAFTA Breakthrough India. This initiative showcases and supports the next generation of creative talent working in Indian films, games and television. It identifies people who had a breakthrough year in the industry. Participants enjoy BAFTA voting rights for one year and free access to BAFTA events and international screenings.
Other shortlisted candidates include director-screenwriters Ajitpal Singh, Arati Kadav, Leena Manimekalai, Prateek Vats, game director Nakul Verma, cinematographer Saumyananda Sahi, writer Shubham, performer Sumukhi Suresh and producer Mathivanan Rajendran.
Having lost his father, filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta, last year, Alokananda struggled to cope with the loss. This announcement comes as a “refreshing silver lining” in her life now. “I had lost my mother, Kuntala Dasgupta, in 2009. This news is the best thing that has happened to me for a long time. I wish I could share this news with my parents,” she said.
Alokananda was the first Indian composer to be shortlisted for the prestigious Berlinale Talents – the Berlin International Film Festival’s talent development program for the world’s top 200 emerging filmmakers and series creators. “I heard about BAFTA Breakthrough from my director friend Shazia Iqbal who made the short film ‘Bebak’. I applied in December and sent in samples of my work. We were selected by a jury which included AR Rahman , Apurva Asrani, Anupam Kher and Ratna Pathak Shah. This news comes at a time when I am dying to go out and work with good content and storytelling all over the world,” she said.
Alokananda does not believe in sticking to any particular region, genre or culture and wants to “diversify”. According to her, the world is getting smaller but the barriers seem to be getting stronger. “I’ve always wanted my composition work to be less hierarchical and more collaborative. In this dystopian and war-torn reality, this initiative seems to bridge the gaps between countries and borders and focus only on talents and enabling them to pursue their careers,” she said.
The composer of ‘Sacred Games’, ‘Ajeeb Daastaans’, ‘Leila’, ‘AK Vs AK’, ‘Tope’, ‘Urojahaj’ and ‘Trapped’ is inspired by UK generated content and shows. “At this time, the initiative will be conducted virtually. I hope to attend physical interactive sessions once everything opens up. I consider it an honor and my playground to explore and experiment more with music if I have the opportunity to work on such projects. This initiative, supported by Netflix, will allow me to do that,” she said.
