Since its inception in 2000, Heart of the Child Music Education has provided joyful and interactive group music experiences for children and their guardians in its hometown of Floyd. FUN and developmentally appropriate classes foster a love of music while developing fundamental musical skills, a secure connection, a secure attachment, and a healthy community.
Kari’s welcoming attitude helps adults and children create a sense of community as they gather on the mat for finger games and bouncing games, play with rhythm instruments, jump, crawl and hover around. swing, wave scarves for choreographed dances and jute in free form with a menagerie of instruments. It’s so nice to be in the classroom that the kids don’t even notice that they are developing the basic skills to make music together for the rest of their lives.
HCME has literally been raising the children of Floyd County with its social and emotional learning-based music program since its inception. He still serves the youngest members of Floyd (from birth to 5 years old) while watching his first students graduate from high school. A high school student recently told Kari, âI don’t remember much from preschool, but I do remember your music!
Heart of the Child music students constantly pursue musical creation as they age, nurtured by the love of music that HCME nurtures in them in their early years. They then participate in programs such as the Floyd JAMs Program and the Floyd Music Lab, take private lessons and form their own groups.

According to federal and state guidelines, fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear a face covering during this event. Adults who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 should continue to wear a face cover to protect themselves and others. Parents, we know that young children cannot be vaccinated yet, so please join us only if you are comfortable with an outdoor class that will make every effort to be socially distanced. According to CDC guidelines, all children aged five and over should cover their mouths and noses with a mask even when outdoors. Children under 5 can wear a mask at your discretion. If you would like extra protection for your family during class, we encourage you to participate at a distance of 10 feet or more from the closest person. We’re going to have fun all the same! Every effort will also be made to discourage the sharing of instruments outside the family unit, and individual music bags will be offered for sale to encourage this.
