Do you know? Music composer Gangai Amaran has written lyrics for many hit Tamil songs

Most of the songs written by Gangai were composed by Ilaiyaraaja.

Gangai Amaran began his career as a lyricist with the movie 16 Vayathinile in 1977.

Gangai Amaran has worked as a music composer, singer, lyricist, writer, actor and director in Tamil films. Although he is famous for composing the music for several successful Tamil films, he has also proved his talent as a lyricist. The lyrics of the songs he wrote continue to be loved by moviegoers.

Gangai started his career as a lyricist with the movie 16 Vayathinile in 1977. He wrote the lyrics for the songs Sendhoora Poove composed by his younger brother and music legend Ilaiyaraaja. The following year, he wrote the lyrics for the song Poovarasam Poothachu for the film Kizhakke Pogum Rail. The song’s lyrics were about human love and concern for nature and wildlife. The lyrics of his songs are full of elements of rural life.

Gangai wrote lyrics for four songs – Kaatril Enthan, Aasaiya Kaathula, Sinorita, Oru Iniya manathu for the 1980 movie Johnny. The film starring Rajinikanth, Sridevi and Deepa in the lead roles was a big hit of its time. The four songs were based on different situations in the film. These songs played a huge role in bringing the crowd to the theaters. Ilaiyaraaja had composed the songs for the film.

Most of the songs written by Gangai were composed by Ilaiyaraaja. He had written many songs composed by Ilaiyaraja. It started with 16 Vayathinile in 1977 and continued till Villu Paattukaaran which was released in 1992. His last work as a lyricist was for the song Poochandi in the movie Massu Engira Masilamani in 2015.

Gangai is the father of filmmaker and actor Venkat Prabhu and singer and songwriter Premji Amaren. Composers Karthik Raja, Yuvan Shankar Raja, singer Bhavatharini and costume designer Vasuki Bhaskar are his relatives.
